United States Government Facilities and Operations
Although these webpages do not even begin to scratch the surface of all the aerospace activity in San Diego, we would be remiss if we didn’t at least mention the large amount of military aerospace activity in the community. These would include the aircraft carrier operations with their guided missile destroyers (DDGs) within the carrier task groups at Naval Base San Diego, the Fleet Readiness Center that does depot level aircraft maintenance and the various squadrons of aircraft and helicopters at North Island Naval Air Station, the Naval Outlying Landing Field Imperial Beach helicopter operations that has earned it the title “Helicopter Capital of the World,” the Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command which occupies the former Consolidated Aircraft factory and much of the top of Point Loma in San Diego, the nuclear submarine base at the bottom of Point Loma which is home to Submarine Squadron 11 ― a fleet of submarines capable of launching Tomahawk cruise missiles and Harpoon missiles, the Marine Corps Air Station Miramar which was made famous by the movie “Top Gun,” and the Jayhawk MH-60T helicopter operations at U.S. Coast Guard Air Station San Diego located across from the San Diego Airport.
Additionally, the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Air and Marine Operations Headquarters are located at March Field in Riverside, CA, with the San Diego Air Branch operating locally to secure the border with Mexico.
