Join the UCSD Student Branch for an exciting presentation from Dr. Gary Fogal on the legendary John. J. Montgomery.
Dr. Fogel will review the accomplishments of pioneer American aviator John J. Montgomery, who is credited with the first controlled glider flights in the Western Hemisphere in a glider he built near San Diego in 1883. Montgomery went on to become one of the first to understand the physics of aerodynamics and circulation of lift, applying these principles in larger tandem-wing gliders that were flown in northern California in 1905, leading to a glider that had both pitch and roll control in the wing in 1911 (a glider which was preserved by the Smithsonian and is still on display today at the San Diego Air and Space Museum).
